James J. Grogan

July 9, 2026 Jeffrey Wiecek

James Joseph Grogan, first generation Irish American born in Manhattan, raised in Yonkers and later settling down in Orange County NY, passed away on July 9th 2026, surrounded by the love of his family in his home after a long battle with cancer. James was Born on September 16, 1960, and lived a life defined by service, dedication, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

James graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx. He continued his education at SUNY Westchester earning a degree in liberal arts. James began his career as an auto mechanic, a profession that reflected his natural abilities to work with his hands, and solve problems. In 1986, he then answered a calling to public service and joined the New York City Police Department. This journey started at the 30th Precinct, where he had a keen eye for spotting guns and stolen cars. There, he met his wife Lenore and had two wonderful boys.

Through hard work and dedication, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to the 32nd Precinct in 1994. His leadership earned the respect of his fellow officers, supervisors, and the community he served. After a distinguished career in law enforcement, he retired in 2008. Retirement did not slow him down and he soon started a security officer career with the Chester School district where his love for protecting others shined. James, known for his kindness, patience, humor and a genuine care for others, was adored by the students, parents and faculty.

James really enjoyed his careers and was proud when both of his sons, Brian and Brendon, followed in his footsteps to serve as first responders in Harlem, NY. Brian joined the FDNY and Brendon joined the NYPD. James is the beloved husband of Lenore (Winkelman), a devoted father to Brian and Brendon, and a cherished brother to Sheila (Barry) and Eamon.

James is predeceased by his loving parents, James Grogan and Helen (Dillon) Grogan, who Immigrated from County Tipperary, Ireland to NYC. Those values of hard work, faith, and dedication helped shape the man he was. Those who knew James will remember him for his strong character, generous spirit and deep love for his family. James will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
