James J. Devine of New York City passed away peacefully on February 17th in Newport, RI, at the age of 92.
Jim was the beloved husband of Mary (nee Cummins), his wife of 62 wonderful years. He is the adored father of daughters Alice Thompson and Sheila Devine, and his late son, Jimmy Devine. Cherished father-in-law of Ken Thompson (Alice) and Marc Lewandoski (Sheila). His Grandson, Luca James Lewandoski, was his greatest pride and joy. Jim is also survived by his brother, Peter Devine, and his sister-in-law Barbara, his sisters-in-law Margaret D’Arcy and Kathleen McCaffrey; his brothers-in-law Dennis Cummins (Maureen) and John Cummins (Frances). He is reunited in death with his dearest sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Nicholson and Margaret “Peggy” Devine. Jim was the treasured uncle and great-uncle of many loved nieces and nephews, and a great friend to many throughout his life.
Born December 16, 1933, in Manhattan and raised in Woodside, Queens, James was a long-time Bronx resident. He served his country in the US Air Force, and was a proud member of the FDNY, serving the city he loved for over 22 years at Ladder Company 2 in midtown Manhattan. Guided by his strong faith, Jim believed in acts of service to those in need and gave of himself by volunteering with many charitable organizations throughout his life, including the FDNY Crisis Center and Catholic Eucharistic Ministry. Jim’s deep faith and devotion were matched only by his sense of humor. There was no such thing as an ordinary moment when Jim was involved. His hilarious observations and legendary one-liners made him a favorite of all who knew and loved him. He was a man of deep kindness and radiant joy, and he will be in our hearts forever.
Reposing Tuesday, February 24th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave, Bronx, NY 10471. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, February 25th at 9:45 AM at St. Margaret of Cortona Church 6000 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
