Giorgio Costa, 81, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, surrounded by his family in the Bronx, New York. Born February 8, 1945, in Spoleto, Italy, he decided to move to America after meeting Muriel Greenspon, an opera singer performing at Spoleto’s Festival dei Due Mondi. They married in Detroit, Michigan in 1974, and resided in New York afterwards. Once there, Giorgio became a member of IATSE Local 1, working as a carpenter at the Metropolitan Opera Company, obtaining the title of Master Carpenter in the 1990s. He worked for the Met, building sets for nearly every opera performed there for 40 years.
Giorgio was also a skilled cook, especially known for his homemade pastas and sauces. After retiring, he took up baking as a hobby, much to the delight of his grandchildren.
Giorgio was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Stefano, daughter-in-law, Kelli, his two grandchildren, Aria and Leo, as well as his sisters, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews in France and Italy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Giorgio’s name to the Friendly Fridge (www.friendlyfridgefoundation.org/take-action).
