Doris Johanna Bernhardine Maria Wahl (née Plöger), a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose life was marked by family, friendships, art, travel, and a deep love of the outdoors, passed away peacefully in New York City on September 22, 2026, at the age of 97.
Doris was born on July 6, 1929, in Essen, Germany, to Felix and Adele Plöger. She grew up in Essen, where she later met Victor Wahl. The two married in 1955 and began their life together in Ghana, where Victor worked in the timber business. In 1959, they emigrated to the United States and settled in Scarsdale, New York, where they built a loving home and raised their children.
Warm, elegant, curious, and generous, Doris had a gift for bringing people together. She was devoted to her family which remained at the center of her life. She loved entertaining and was known for welcoming family and friends into her home for lively dinners, traditional German meals, good conversations, and plenty of laughter.
Doris also had a lifelong appreciation for art, music and culture. She was happiest wandering through art galleries and museums of New York City, going to classical music concerts and operas and took particular pleasure in sharing that love of art and music with her children and grandchildren, introducing them to the cultural experiences that meant so much to her.
Equally important to Doris was her love of nature and adventure. An avid hiker and skier, she returned regularly to the mountains of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, a place she treasured deeply. Over the years, she enjoyed hiking alpine trails and skiing throughout Europe and the United States, with friends and family, finding both peace and exhilaration in the mountains.
Doris beautifully documented her travels and the many holidays and birthdays celebrated with family and friends through photos. She loved to transform these captured memories into custom greeting and holiday cards for her loved ones, while also creating many cherished photo albums.
Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Victor, and her beloved son, Henry.
Following Victor’s death in 1991, Doris continued to embrace life with independence, curiosity, and energy. She remained in New York City surrounded by family, culture, and the many interests that enriched her long life.
She is survived by her children, Eric, Peter, and Esther, together with their spouses and partners, Margaret, Patricia, and Frank, and by her cherished grandchildren, Aidan, Maeve, Evan, Liam, and Lila. They will remember her for her warmth, resilience, adventurous spirit, wonderful meals, museum outings, and above all, the love and devotion she gave so freely to her family.
Services celebrating Doris’ life will be held on Sunday, October 4, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, New York. Committal will be private.
In accordance with her wishes, Doris will be returned to Germany, a fitting return to the country and landscapes that remained so close to her heart throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris’ memory may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
