It is with great sadness that the family of Katherine “Cathy” Marie Sweeney (nee) McCarthy shares her passing at age 86. She passed peacefully on Wednesday October 26th, 2022 at 7:15pm in the evening.
Katherine was born May 5th, 1936 in Ballygurteen, Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland. She is predeceased by her brother PJ and his wife Mary, brother Tom and his wife Margaret.
Katherine is survived by her brother Johnnie and his wife Anna McCarthy, her sister Peggy and her husband John Fitzgerald, her sister Eileen her husband Dermot Hurley, her brother Bill his wife Hannah McCarthy, and her brother Fachtna, whose wife Ina McCarthy is also deceased.
Katherine attended national school, in Ballygorteen, Co. Cork, Ireland, St. Mary’s Convent, Sisters of Charity, secondary school in Dunmanway, Co. Cork, Ireland, and concluded her education with a nursing degree from Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.
Katherine left her native Ireland and immigrated to New York in 1961. She proudly worked for many years at Montefiore Medical Center, and then on to Columbia University Medical Center.
Katherine married the love of her life, Denis Sweeney (deceased 2014) in 1979 and they were married for 35 wonderful years. Kathy and Denis were cherished by all, and were very generous to all they knew.
Throughout her career, Katherine was a nurse caregiver committed to helping all her patients. She had a love of travel, reading, singing her favorite songs and getting together with family. Kathy was known for her warmth, love and generous personality along with her big smile, wit, and infectious laugh. She will be missed by all whom she touched.
Deeply proud of her Irish heritage, she participated annually in the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade, where she would meet up with her brother Bill and his family from Long Island and her sister Peggy and husband John for many years.
She was adored by many, and will be lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, extended family members in Ireland, neighbors and lifelong friends.
Family will receive friends Tuesday November 1st, 2022, from 3-7 p.m. at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Parking is in the St. Margaret’s Church parking lot between 260th and 261st Streets. Parking is limited at the church but can be found in the surrounding area.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday November 2nd, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, 3250 Arlington Avenue, Bronx NY 10463, 718-548-4470. Interment to follow at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne NY.
The mass will be live-streamed for any who cannot attend.
