Eddie Lavin

December 31, 2021 Jeffrey Wiecek

December 2, 1932 – December 31, 2021

Edward “Eddie” Lavin was a beloved son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. Eddie is pre-deceased by his brothers Kenneth, Lawrence, and sister Lorraine. He is survived by his brother Robert Lavin, his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and a great-grand niece. The eldest son of Edward Lavin and Loretta Lee, Eddie grew up and lived in Washington Heights his entire life.

Eddie went to Incarnation Grammar School and George Washington High School. He was an exceptional athlete that excelled in Track and Baseball. He was scouted and signed by the Washington Senators right out of high school. That was put on hold due to being drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. He served two years of active duty as an MP in the Army then was positioned on standby reserved duty until being honorably discharged in 1961. He continued to play sports throughout his adult life, pitching fast pitch league into his mid 70’s.

Eddie had a union career that would span over 50 years as a newspaper pressman and foreman for the New York Post, as well as various newspapers in New York. He was beloved and respected by all coworkers for his knowledge and fairness he expressed for the workers no matter their skill level.

Eddie was a man of adventure who loved to travel. Some of his favorite places were the Catskills, where he would go to the various festivals at Hunter Mountain. He would also spend summers down the Jersey Shore in Belmar. His other adventures included Lake George, Myrtle Beach, Dominican Republic, and Alaska. When he wasn’t traveling you could find him on any given Sunday at Piper’s Kilt in Inwood for Brunch or down the street at the Liffy Bar enjoying a cigar on the bench outside.

Eddie had a fulfilling life with family and friends. He was always the life of the party with a smile on his face and a beer in hand. He loved to celebrate special occasions, holidays and even life itself! A truly kind and generous man with a big heart who always put others first, never turned his back on anyone and made everyone feel like family. You would never be able to go anywhere without meeting someone who knew him or knew of him. A man whose smile could light up any room, a true legend of his time who will surely be missed by all.

The wake will be held at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, N.Y. on Tuesday, January 4th from 4-7pm. The burial will be at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne on Wednesday, January 5th.
