James “Jimmy” McVeety

December 28, 2021 Jeffrey Wiecek

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that our beloved father and grandfather, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 28th 2021. He is survived by his sons Bob, Andrew, and Paul, as well as his seven grandchildren, Mary Clare, Christopher, Jack, Mason, Patrick, Cate, and Margaret. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce, and son Christopher. Jimmy was born and raised in Elmhurst, Queens. He attended Trinity High school in Brooklyn where he was a two-sport athlete. James entered the NYPD Academy and graduated in June of 1957. From there he would serve in the NYPD for 33 years attaining the rank of Sergeant. Jimmy received both his bachelors and masters degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1972 and 1976 respectively, all the while working full time both as a police officer and a father. After retiring from the NYPD in 1990, James became a supervising investigator for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office where he worked for another 13 years, finally retiring in 2003. James’ commitment to his career in law enforcement was a testament to his character, in which his sense of duty to serve the public and provide for his family were one in the same. Later in life, James became a loving grandfather to his seven grandchildren, where his countless stories, trips to the beach, games of catch, and complaining about the Yankees and Giants could keep anyone entertained. The lessons he taught, wisdom he provided, and his witty humor will be forever remembered and cherished. Jimmy will be forever missed by his family, friends, and law enforcement community. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jimmy’s memory may be made to the NYCPBA Widows and Children Fund, 125 Broad Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10004-2400.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am Tuesday, January 4th 2022, at St. Margaret of Cortona Church, 6000 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
