Alfred Schwartz

April 8, 2020 Jeffrey Wiecek

Alfred Schwartz, a beloved Riverdale resident, died on April 8th, 2020 at 93 from the Coronavirus. Loving husband, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, Uncle and great friend to the community for over 60 years.  Survived by his children Gayle & Eugene Calimese, Amy & Kevin Kearney, Heidi Schwartz and Micheal Brady, sister Myrna Rosenblum & brother in law Robert, eight grand-children,  special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alfred served in the Unites States Army, 31st Infantry Regiment with an honorable discharge in1947. Alfred had a varied career working with his Father running an after school group and summer camp. Running the Schwartzie bus company they were able to transport city kids to the country for a rewarding summer. He also worked at local businesses including Cappys and Prestige Cleaners.

Alfred married Cecile in 1954 and were inseparable until her passing in 2014.

They enjoyed cruising, shows, casinos and their neighborhood haunt, Blue Bay garnered lifelong friendships. Alfred loved the fights, bowling, reading, bingo, dominoes, Big Band music, and baseball.  Yankees were his passion. His treasured memory was sitting in the stands while Gehrig’s retirement speech sounded across the stadium. In 2018 Alfred was honored as Veteran of the game.  Being on the field with his Army picture on the jumbotron is a memory never to be forgotten. Honored on the same field as greatest players, Alfred felt like “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

For the last 4 years The Hebrew Home for The Aged, kept him safe and social. Gatherings still very important, as being surrounded by family and friends kept him smiling. Saying he was thrilled to meet his Great Grandson was an understatement.

Alfred was full of life, joking with the staff or residents, keeping up with current events prompting avid conversations.  Loved to ask you to google, as he was always trying to find the answer to trivia, sports questions or random information.  A laugh genuine and full of life, no one was a better storyteller, toast giver which made times together memorable. Alfred wasn't ready for goodbye as there were still more stories to share.
