Bartholomew Murray

February 26, 2026 Jeffrey Wiecek

Riverdale, Bronx, New York and formerly Shankill, Elphin, Co. Roscommon

6th January, 1932 – 26th February, 2026

Bartholomew Murray passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026 at the age of 94 after a short illness.  Loving father of Siobhan Mason (Robert) and predeceased by his beloved son, Edmund.

A native of Elphin, Co. Roscommon, Ireland, he emigrated at the age of 21, first to London, then Toronto, finally settling in the Bronx, New York. Known to family and friends in Ireland as Bert, he is survived by his sisters Rita and Hetty, brother-in-law Jack, sister-in-law Mary Teresa, as well as many nephews and nieces, neighbors and friends both in the US and Ireland. He now joins his parents, Richard and Julia, and his brothers Charles, Richard, Dermot and Eric and sister Marion in heavenly rest.

Having worked as a bartender in both London and Toronto, after a brief stint at the Blarney Stone in New York City he gave up his union card in 1960 to join the world of banking with the Irving Trust Company and retired from The Bank of New York in 1997.  Bart enjoyed many active years of retirement, with his daily walks, and frequent cycles, but his favorite pastime was social dancing at the many Irish county association dances around NYC and Westchester.  He enjoyed travel—in addition to his many return trips to visit with family in Ireland, he toured Paris, Rome and the Holy Land. A long-time parishioner of St. Margaret of Cortona, Bart ushered and took up collections at Sunday morning Masses for many years. He was also a member of the County Roscommon Society of NY for many years, once proudly carrying the county banner up Fifth Avenue in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Reposing Tuesday, March 3 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave, Bronx, NY 10471. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, March 4 at 9:45 AM at St. Margaret of Cortona Church 6000 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471. In accordance with his fondest wish, Bart’s remains will be promptly expatriated to be laid to rest on Saturday March 7th at the New Cemetery, in his hometown of Elphin, Co. Roscommon, Ireland.
