Daniel F. Sullivan

August 26, 2025 Jeffrey Wiecek

Daniel F. “Pooch” Sullivan was born on August 19, 1933 in an apartment in the South Bronx. He was the third child of Daniel and Hannah (Nee Collins) Sullivan, Irish immigrants from County Cork.  At the age of 15, he lied about his age to join the National Guard.  After a brief stint as a New York City police officer, he proudly served thirty years in the New York City Fire Department.

On October 12, 1957, he married his soulmate, Eileen (Nee O’Shea).  In 1964, he and Eileen moved to Riverdale where they raised their three children.  A fixture around Riverdale, he spent most of his career at Engine & Ladder 52 in the Bronx.

Once when laying sick in bed, the house across the street exploded and he ran out in the winter air in his bathrobe to rescue a mother and child.

Although he never had formal art lessons, Daniel was an amazing artist. He was fond of painting marine landscapes, recreating famous artist’s work, sketching portraits and building ship models.  He was also a natural handyman, often being the person who fixed things around the house.

Daniel spent his last days surrounded by family.  He will be remembered for his art, humor and generous heart.

Daniel was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Hannah; his siblings: Denis, Mary, and John (Chris). He is survived by his three children, Susan Donahue (Chuck), Daniel Sullivan (Cathy) and Kerry Sullivan; his seven grandchildren, Daniel Sullivan (Kimberly), Elizabeth Sullivan, Brandon Kolvek (Lauren), Ryan Kolvek, Siobhan Donahue, Colleen Donahue, and Meaghan Donahue (Kamil); and one great grandson, Daniel P. Sullivan; sister-in-law: Agnes, and many nieces and nephews.

Reposing will be held on Friday, August 29th from 8:30-10:30 am at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 29th at 11:00 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment will follow Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
