Kathleen Hughes

Kathleen Hughes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on May 6, 2025. Born on November 27th in Inwood, New York, she was the daughter of the late William and Kay Sheehan. Kathy grew up in Point Lookout, Long Island, where she shared a home with her sisters, Lois and Mary, and her brother, William. Kathy attended Sacred Heart High School and cherished the memories of lively gatherings with her many cousins in Point Lookout.

After high school, Kathy's adventurous spirit led her to become a flight attendant with American Airlines, which took her to numerous cities across the United States and internationally. She enjoyed her travels and was particularly fond of experiencing new places, especially locations with a view of the ocean. Kathy later went on to graduate from Fordham University, a milestone that she was proud of. She met and married James and was dedicated to raising her daughters, Mary Erin and Kerry and teaching for the Archdiocese of New York.

A lover of music and theatre, Kathy enjoyed attending performances at the Irish Repertory Theater. She enjoyed going to baseball games to cheer for the NY Mets, discussing politics, and a good cup of coffee. Her greatest joy came from visiting her grandchildren in California.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, James, her daughters Mary Erin and Kerry, son-in-law Omar, and her cherished grandchildren, Adam, Hannah, and Deen. She is also survived by her brother, Bill, and her sister, Mary. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Lois.

Kathy was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and was a faithful parishioner at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. She lived her life with compassion, kindness, and integrity. Her family and friends knew her for her thoughtful and gentle nature—whether it was a simple act of kindness or a word of encouragement, Kathy always made those around her feel valued.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 3 to 7 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Margaret of Cortona Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Franciscan Mission Associates in Mt. Vernon, NY.
