Patricia Sheridan (nee McCrossan) passed into eternal rest on April 15th, 2025. She was born on April 10th, 1938, in Morningside Heights Women’s Hospital to Sarah and Jack McCrossan. She married Joseph Sheridan in 1966, and they were steadfastly in love for 55 years until he predeceased her in 2021. She is predeceased by her parents, her in-law Thomas and Margaret Sheridan, her siblings Mary, Susan and Margaret, her nephew Ryan, her brothers-in-law Norman, Thomas, Vincent (MaryJane) and John (Anne) and her sisters-in-law Patricia and Catherine. Her surviving siblings are John (Mary), Bernard, JoJo (Joseph) and Thomas (Sue).
Her children are Margaret Bravo (Jose), Mary Mohall (Benny), Joseph (Kelly) and William (Sonnia). Her eight beloved grandchildren are Meghan and Caitlin Bravo, Kevin Mohall, Kerry, Alison, Emily, Ryan and Rory Sheridan.
She leaves numerous (all very much loved) nieces and nephews
Pat loved her Ascension parish roots. She spoke proudly of her West 109th street neighborhood and the people in it. She attended Julia Richman High School and began working at the telephone company after an ill-fated stint as a telegraph girl. She got tired of picking up the telegraph tape off the floor, walked across the street on her lunch break and landed another job. That incident was emblematic of her drive and matter of fact-ness. Pure Pat.
After her marriage Pat (also called Patsy by her family) settled in North Riverdale with her husband Joe raising their four children and working a variety of jobs around her children’s schedules- running the gift shop at the Hebrew Home, executive secretary at North Side Savings Bank on 231st and ending her career as a retail manager at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
Despite the pressures of being a busy working mother- Pat’s home was filled with laughter, shared dinnertimes around the table and many of her children’s friends and cousins who thought of her as a second mother. She was quick to laugh, quick to forgive and her one liners were legendary.
When thinking of a word that truly embodies her personality, the one that comes to mind is moxie. She embodied the determination and energy of that word. Whether gathering her four toddlers in a yellow checker cab to go see the pediatrician or coaching girls’ softball in the North Riverdale Baseball League, she did everything enthusiastically.
After her retirement she became a snowbird with Joe, splitting her time between Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey and Sunrise, Florida. They spent many happy years shuttling between the two states visiting with their adored grandchildren. They traveled widely with her sister Margaret and his brother Tom who were married to each other.
After her husband Joseph died in 2021, Pat showed the true measure of her courage and determination. She accepted life on life’s terms, moving to Orangeburg to be closer to her children. She never engaged in self-pity or asking, “why me” despite some health setbacks. She continued to laugh, to have adventures and root for her Yankees. Pat enjoyed seeing her family (especially her grandchildren) who she adored, traveling and her beloved “Chinese Fortune” and “Wild Wolf” slot machines at the casino. She would give a rap for good measure if in her opinion they were “cold”.
Our lives will shine a little less brightly without this funny, fierce and loving woman in it, but we take comfort knowing that she is in heaven surrounded by her husband, family and friends who went before her and her favorite things- casinos, cruises (with no seasickness), Boston crème donuts, her favorite cat Casey and Dollar Tree stores.
Born on April 10th – the day the Titanic set sail and died on April 15th, the day it sank -make no mistake about it – our mother, Nanny, sister, aunt, second mother and friend would never let something as inconsequential as an iceberg stop her. She was indomitable.
God bless and watch over her. We love you and will miss you to the end of all our days.
Until we meet again. Thank you for sending the rainbow that day.
Wake services will be held at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave, on Tuesday, April 22nd from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 23 at 10:00am.
