Barbara Ferris, 61, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2025, surrounded by the love and support of her best friend and true love, Billy Ormsby, and close friend Bonnie Bonit.
Barbara was born on November 15, 1963, in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, New York, to her loving parents Lawrence and Shirley. A proud "Bronx Strong" woman, Barbara was a fighter and warrior throughout her battles with illness, always showing incredible strength and determination. She was the youngest of five children and grew up surrounded by fun and laughter with her family. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother Larry, and her brother-in-law Pete Chiodo, a dedicated member of the FDNY.
Barbara is survived by her sisters Kathleen Gilson (Jimmy), Laura Frank (Kenny), and Joann Chiodo, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, grand niece and nephews and extended family.
Barbara had a remarkable gift—her memory. She could recall experiences from her past in vivid detail, especially her cherished childhood moments in the Bronx. Whether it was a funny story, a special trip, or a favorite memory shared with friends and family, Barbara never forgot the little things. Her amazing memory made her a natural storyteller, and she had a way of making everyone feel as though they were a part of those moments.
Barbara found joy in the simplest pleasures of life. She was an avid fan of pinball, reading, movies, music, jewelry, and the New York Rangers and Mets. But above all, Barbara’s heart belonged to the water. Wherever she swam, she found peace in the water, her sanctuary. Many fond memories were made with friends and family beginning at Kelton’s (FBTC), followed by Rockaway Beach, the Riverdale Neighborhood House, and her final swims at a peaceful private pool, thanks to the generosity of Michael Cawley.
Barbara’s love for animals and children was undeniable. She had a special gift for reaching and connecting with children, becoming "Aunt Barbara" to countless kids throughout her life. She touched the hearts of many, including her most recent joy, JoJo, Bonnie’s son. Barbara was the best fur Mom to Sneakers. Punk was an amazing rescue cat that provided great comfort to Barbara, especially in her final days. There was never an animal in Barbra’s presence that was not gifted with affection.
Barbara’s heart was as big as her personality. Her kindness and humor made her a beloved figure in every community she was part of. Barbara loved to talk to anyone, making friends wherever she went, and was always the adult who was ready to play, laugh, and make memories with all ages. Her feisty spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at The Riverdale on Hudson Funeral Home on March 9th from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a memory-sharing reception at Downey’s Bar and Grill following from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Barbara’s love, laughter, and spunkiness will never be forgotten. Her last request for all was to “live, love, and laugh”. Rest in peace, Barbara—you will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you.
