Anthony Thacher Sears

February 3, 2022 Jeffrey Wiecek

Anthony Thacher Sears, 87, of Yonkers, New York, peacefully passed away on January 31, 2022.

Anthony was born on June 28, 1934 to Richard and Katherine (née Haskell) Sears in Boston, Massachusetts.

He attended Rumsey Hall School, The Groton School and upon graduation in 1952 enlisted in the Marines to serve our country. As a Sergeant, he was a Radar Repairman and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. Upon his return, he joined the ROTC and pursued an AB degree from Harvard College. He was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club as well as the Owl Club.

After graduation, as a Field Artillery Commander he served at Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked briefly for John Hancock Insurance in Boston and moved on to New York working as a sales promotion copywriter for Look Magazine. He discovered a love for travel and worked in Sales, Marketing and Tariffs in the Airline Industry, first at Eastern Airlines, then Japan Airlines, Olympic Airways, British Caledonian, VARIG, again at Olympic and finally as the Tariffs Consultant at MALEV before retirement. While working for Eastern Airlines, he met his wife Aija to whom he was married for over fifty years.

It was during this time that he moved to Yonkers and discovered a family at Christ Church Riverdale. He became an active member, served on the Vestry, several committees and was a Lay Eucharistic Minister through the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Encouraged by Father Richard Kemmler, he continued his learning, through the EFM (Education for Ministry), by Extension at The School of Theology, University of the South.

When no longer traveling internationally, Tony liked the sea and spent many summer vacations at Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts and at Little Rhody’s Block Island (BIRI).

Anthony leaves behind his devoted wife Aija (née Rankis); his son Anthony and daughter-in-law Suzanne (née Flynn); daughter Pamela, and daughter Mara and son-in-law Daniel Castles; as well as his grandchildren, Anthony, Christina and Daniella Sears and Christopher Castles. He is also survived by his siblings, Richard, Sarah, Christopher, Paul and Anne as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Church, 5040 Henry Hudson Parkway East (at 252nd Street)
Bronx NY 10471 on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite local charitable organization.
