Sandy Alcott Shalleck

Sandy Alcott Shalleck, 77, of Riverdale, NY, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, September 18th.  Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements. Visitation will be held on October 11, 2021 from 2-5 pm, and the Funeral service will be at Christ Church on October 12th, 2021 at 10:00 am.   A private Burial will follow at a later date. 

Due to COVID restrictions, masks are required, and time is restricted.

Sandy was born on October 21, 1943 in Middletown, Ohio, the only child of Dorothy and Donald Maxson. She graduated high school from Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia. She went on to earn both an undergraduate and Masters degree from Mercy College in Yonkers, NY. She had a long career as an editor at many various publications including the Riverdale Press and Scientific American. She was an avid tennis player and loved tending to her gardens.  She was an active member of the Riverdale Yacht Club for many years, where she served in many roles, including as their first female Commodore. She also gave generously of her time to many local organizations including The Riverdale Nature Conservancy, Riverdale Neighborhood House, and Riverdale Mental Health.  She was an avid member of the Shakespeare club.

Sandy is survived by her sons David (Laura) Hess of Basking Ridge, NJ and Daniel Hess of Riverdale, NY, and her grandchildren Lucy, Harry, Lizzy, and Teddy Hess also of Basking Ridge, NJ.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Donald.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverdale Nature Preservancy, 5521 Mosholu Ave, Bronx, NY 10471.  The family wishes to extend their appreciation to everyone who offered support during this time.
