Florence Harrison

Florence Harrison (1927 - 2021)

Wife, Sister, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years. Born and raised in Manhattan with her sister, Catherine Sherry, she lived in the Riverdale section of the Bronx since October of 1977. Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, John T. Harrison. Mom was wonderfully devoted to her 2 children, Maureen Gelber (Steve) and Susan LaSpina (Jimmy). She was a loving Grandmother to Scott Taylor (Amy), Melissa Riccardi (Mike), and James LaSpina (Kerry). Great Grandma to James Michael LaSpina III and Michaela Grace Riccardi. Known as Aunt Bumpsy to numerous nieces and nephews.

Our mother was busy, raising children, volunteering as a Girl Scout leader, and eventually going back to work at the phone company. 15 years of students who passed through the lunchroom at the Riverdale Country School knew her as the legendary "Grandma Flo."

In her retirement, she could be found enjoying a jigsaw puzzle, listening to Barbara Streisand with a cup of Lipton tea and a cookie. Mom always put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own, especially her family. She led by example. There was never a job too large or too small that she would not tackle. When complimented on her great cooking, she’d respond, “Good. Eat it!"

Mom had a big heart. She was strong, independent, and touched the lives of all who knew her. We will miss her every day.

Special thanks to the staff at Schervier Nursing Center for their welcoming arms, heart-warming attention and endless care.

Reposing Friday 2/5/21 from 1-4 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave. Bx.  Mass of Christian Burial Saturday 9:45 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

(Facial coverings are required and adherence to social distancing is in effect due to COVID-19 restrictions).
