Phyllis Ruth Spatz, aged 94, passed away on April 12 in Riverdale, New York. She died peacefully in her sleep.

Phyllis was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926 to Mae and Morris Zweifler, and was a life-long New Yorker. Naturally gifted at math, as a young woman, she attended City College of New York and became a Certified Public Accountant. For 50 years, she worked as an office manager and comptroller in the automotive industry.

Phyllis married her childhood friend, Gerald Spatz, in 1952. While Gerald’s life was cut short by cancer, they had a loving marriage and raised two young children. After his passing in 1969, Phyllis became a single mother, raising her children with love and care. She was known for putting her children’s needs above her own, and would go to any length to ensure their well-being.

Phyllis was a great lover of music, and would find every opportunity to sing. She knew the lyrics to hundreds of songs. She was an active bridge player and became a silver life master in her 80s.

Phyllis is survived by her children Matthew and Melissa; her son-in law Alex, who she considered a second son; and her granddaughter Jennifer.

Due to COVID-19, only a small family service will be held on Sunday, April 19, and a shiva gathering will be held virtually on Monday, April 20 at 7:30 pm.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hebrew Home at Riverdale https://www.riverspringhealth.org/donation-form/.
