Mary (Mae) Dowd (née Carey) passed away at home on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Loving wife of the late Thomas, mother of Dorothy Walker (Kevin), Diane DeCarlo (Tony), Joan, Gerard (Cathy), daughters-in-law Becky & Kerriann. She was predeceased by daughter Mary Smyth and sons Raymond and Thomas.

Mae was the adored grandma to Clare, Christopher, Deirdre, Daron, Stephanie, Nicole, Andrea, Siobhan, Erin, Heather, Gerard, Thomas, Brittany, Stephen and Sara and great grandma to 13. She is survived by 2 sisters, Kathleen Dowd and Ann Sheridan and brother-in-law Joe Dowd.  Mae was a loving aunt and friend to many.

Mae was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 1, 1922 to Thomas and Winnie(McHugh) Carey. She was one of six girls who grew up in St. Jerome’s parish in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Although she grew up during the depression she had many wonderful memories of her family life & the friends she met along the way. She had life long friends from elementary school and high school. Mae was always there for her family & friends, she could be counted on to bring a calm & loving support. Her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren were the loves  of her life and brought her much joy.

Mae enjoyed traveling with family members, she was always up for a trip. Perhaps her favorite was a trip she took to Ireland in 1977. She went with her sisters Kathleen, Winnie & Theresa. They got to visit family in County Mayo and tour other beautiful parts of the country. It was a very special trip. Throughout her life, Mae was sustained by her Catholic faith. She loved saying the rosary with Mother Angelica and watching the Mass from St Patrick’s Cathedral.

While we are bereft by her passing we are comforted knowing she lived a long & loving life and is now at rest with her God & many beloved friends & family that predeceased her.

Reposing Sunday 3-8 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Mass of Christian Burial Monday 9:45 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
