Dorothy St. Clair Guild    Dec 22, 1934 - June 23, 2019

Dorothy St. Clair Guild, a 45-year resident of the Riverdale section of The Bronx, New York City passed away on June 23, 2019.  She died peacefully, in a New York hospital, surrounded by members of her family. She was determined to recover from treatments and surgeries she endured the last 15 months and her death, the result of a fall, was sudden and unexpected.

She is survived by her husband, Blake Wayland, her brother, Dr. Donald Guild, and daughters Anne Rambaud Herren and Carolyn Rambaud Yapchanyk, and six grandchildren. She was born December 22, 1934 in New York City, the daughter of Dr. Cameron St. Clair Guild of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia and Corrine King Guild of Jackson, MS.

Ms. Guild grew up in Jackson Heights, NY until age 11, when she moved with her family to Tupper Lake, NY. After graduation from Tupper Lake High School, she attended Cornell University, graduating in 1956.  Her academic success won membership in Phi Beta Kappa during her junior year. While at Cornell she became fluent in a number of languages, including Spanish, French and Portuguese.

In the years following, she worked as a legal secretary largely in New York, retiring from Jones Day, in 2012, after 14 years with the firm.   She was a lifelong student of the arts, history, language, politics and took advantage of all that New York City offers, including theater; classes and lectures at Hunter College, the New School, The 92nd Street Y and more. She had memberships in most museums, where she was often seen squiring grandchildren or out of town visitors to the latest exhibits.

Ms. Guild was a prolific reader; there was seldom a day without the New York Times or a week without the New Yorker. In recent times, she was never without her Kindle which often held multiple books to read at once. She had a passion for travel. In the last 19 years, she and her husband traveled to China, India, Prague, London, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Switzerland (5 times), Italy, France, Spain, and Russia. They also traveled extensively in the United States and were recently on a quest to visit all the Presidential libraries with only a few remaining to visit.

She loved cats and enjoyed the company of Pumpkin, a lovely orange tabby adopted from an animal shelter. Pumpkin, a loving cat, will remain in the family. From childhood Ms. Guild spent summers in Nova Scotia and considered that her second home. She enjoyed the peaceful view of Porters Lake from her cottage. She was a remarkable woman who will be missed by all who knew her.

A private Celebration of Life ceremony is planned for July 9 in New York City.  Interment will be on August 1 at Riverside Cemetery in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, followed by a gathering in Porters Lake.

In Lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your favorite local no kill animal shelter or animal rescue organization.
