Stephen Doyle

June 27, 2017 Jeffrey Wiecek

Stephen Doyle,  a resident of New York for 60+ years, passed away on June 27, 2017 at The Schervier Nursing Center in Riverdale, New York. He was born in Lynn, MA, where he grew up, graduated from Boston College and received his Master's Degree at Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y.  Stephen was a Professor of Sociology and taught at several NY Universities before settling in with the Jesuits at St Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J where he received his Bene Merenti award for 30+ years of devoted service to his students there. During his tenure at St Peter's, he created and launched a series of Ethics classes which has evolved into an annual Ethics Symposium. Stephen married Ruth Narita, a fellow graduate whom he met at Fordham University. They married in 1956 , lived in Riverdale and raised three children Michael, Elizabeth and Peter. Over the years they hosted innumerable out-of-town visitors, relatives,  holiday dinners, Japanese New Years' Open House parties, family gatherings and other parties in their home. Many of Steve's students took their make -up exams at their dining room table. Steve was extraordinarily sociable and had an irrepressible, generous spirit; if somebody needed any help, Steve could be counted on to provide it. He took an interest in everybody and spoke to all those he met as if he'd known them forever. Steve loved the Yankees and other NY teams but was a die hard Red Sox fan.   He also coached a little league team named 'The Yankees'.   He didn't enjoy world travelling like his other 3 siblings but he enjoyed getting out to watch a baseball game at Yankee Stadium, visit the Bronx Zoo, ride the subway to Coney Island for a Nathan's hot dog and riding on the team bus to watch the away basketball games played by St Peter's students and their home games.  He served as Chair of Sociology at St Peter's. Steve served as a lector and was a long time parishioner of St Margaret of Cortona in Riverdale New York.   He retired from teaching at St. Peter's to enjoy reading the New York Times from cover to cover

Steve is predeceased by two of his siblings, Irene and James and his son Michael. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Ruth, his sister Mary, his children Peter and Liz and their spouses Beth and Al, his 3 grandchildren Kylee, Sam and Sarah and his many cousins, nieces, nephews , their spouses and children and extended family. Viewing will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Ave., Bronx, NY.  Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday July 6th 2017, at 9:45 a.m. at St. Margaret of Cortona Church, 6000 Riverdale Ave., Bronx, NY 10471. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.                                                           The family sincerely thanks Steve’s devoted caregiver Ms. Eva Agostini and the wonderful medical and nursing staff at Schervier Nursing Center, Riverdale.
