Austin Ernest Harthman Sr.

St. Thomas, USVI

Austin Ernest Harthman Sr. passed peacefully in his sleep on November 5, 2017.  Austin was born to Rhoda and Sammy Harthman Sr. in the U.S Virgin Islands.

Austin is survived by his daughter, Marlene and son, Austin Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Anne, Gene, Brendan, Austin III, and Jacqueline; 1 great grandchild, Sydney; 3 brothers, Arthur, Albert, and Sammy Jr.; 1 sister, Charlotte; and numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Austin grew up in St. Thomas Virgin Islands USA and left to join the U.S Army.  He served honorably and moved to New York City upon his discharge.  There he met the love of his life, Mercedes or as she was affectionately called by everyone who knew her "Muñeca".  For she was so beautiful. Muñeca is the Spanish word for doll. She was his Muñeca. Together they provided a beautiful upbringing for their two children - Marlene and Austin Jr.  He worked for the Ford Motor Company.  He left New York and went to live in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands  with Mercedes where he went into business with his siblings.  He was a Director at Harthman Leasing, a real estate leasing business in the Virgin Islands which was home.

Austin was at ease on the beach and enjoyed travelling.  He went on multiple cruises with his wife and kids as he saw the world.  He was a happy man that enjoyed playing with his kids and grandkids.  He was a gentle giant that enjoyed to rough house and laugh. He had a playful spirit that always smiled through.

He will be missed.

Reposing Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Mass of Christian Burial Monday 10 am at St. Gabriel's Church. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
