Mary Claire Tasker

Mary Claire Tasker (nee Blake), a New York City native who attended Wadleigh High School, passed away on May 7th 2019. Beloved mother of Barbara C. Doherty and the late Edward J. Tasker.

Claire was working for Norden Bomb Sights, when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, a date that will live in infamy.  On December 8, at work, she talked to her friend Myrtle about joining the Army to aid in the war effort. She persuaded her friend Myrtle to enlist.  They joined up, but Claire was told that she was too young and needed parental permission.  Her father said, "no way, no how."  Claire changed the date on her Baptismal Certificate and joined to Army.  After an honorable discharge, she became a housewife.  After two children and a divorce, she went to work at Harlem/Apple Savings Bank. She rose from teller to chief teller to chief clerk.  She was a chief clerk at retirement.  She later worked with children at Seton Day School, before retirement.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, May 10th 2019 from 2-8 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY.  Mass will be held Saturday, May 11th 2019 at 9:45 am at St. Margaret of Cortona Church, Bronx, NY. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
